Three Indian nationals who traveled to Iran earlier this month are missing, India’s embassy in Tehran said on Wednesday, adding that efforts are underway to locate them and ensure their safety. “Family members of 3 Indian citizens have informed the Embassy of India that their relatives are missing after having travelled to Iran,” the embassy said in a statement. “The Embassy has strongly taken up this matter with the Iranian authorities, and requested that the missing Indians should be urgently traced and their safety should be ensured.”

The missing men — Hushanpreet Singh, Jaspal Singh, and Amritpal Singh — are all from Punjab and reportedly lost contact with their families shortly after landing in Tehran on May 1. According to reports, the men were allegedly kidnapped and a ransom was demanded.The kidnappers, said the families, demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore. The embassy said it is in regular contact with the families. There was no immediate comment from Iranian authorities. The three men are residents of Sangrur, Nawanshahr and Hoshiarpur districts of Punjab. They took a flight from Delhi and were supposed to reach Australia on a work permit. However, the agents took them to Iran under the pretext of a temporary stay there. Later, they were kidnapped.Since May 11, the families have not been in contact with them. It is also learnt that the agent from Hoshiarpur, who sent the young men to Iran, is absconding. The family has also lodged a police complaint against him. An FIR against the agent was filed on May 16.
