Shah Rukh Khan has added to a year of stunning achievements by topping the Top 50 Asian Celebrities In The World list for 2023. The Bollywood superstar beat off strong competition from around the world in this year’s edition of the popular list, published annually by UK based Eastern Eye newspaper. The iconic actor added to a record breaking year by ranking ahead of international stars from global cinema, television, the music industry, arts, literature, and social media. His blockbuster hits Pathaan and Jawan, and a guaranteed third success with red hot release Dunki reignited a floundering Hindi cinema industry and reclaimed his crown as the king of Bollywood.
Eastern Eye entertainment editor, Asjad Nazir, who puts together the list explained why the 58-year-old actor made such a big impact. “By the time 2023 ends, the king Khan will become the first leading man from the modern era to have three huge Bollywood blockbuster hits in a calendar year. By drawing big audiences back into cinema halls with global juggernauts, the actor gave a movie industry that has been in deep decline a much needed boost and had a transformative effect. The history-making superstar eclipsed everyone else with his brilliance and reminded global audiences what escapist Bollywood cinema is capable of.”
Khan astonishingly found success without media interviews before his films released and kept with that by not commenting on topping this year’s list. Sentiments he expressed to fans earlier this year on social media summed up his year, when Khan wrote: "Nothing makes me happier than the fact that I can entertain you a bit. I live in a dream of your love. Thank you for allowing me to entertain you all.”
The top 50 list celebrating Asian stars who shone the brightest in 2023, is based on brilliant work, positive impact, breaking boundaries, shattering glass ceilings, fan attention, and being inspiring in some way. There was also a big public input with readers and social media users nominating their favourite.
Alia Bhatt came in second for work in Indian cinema, Hollywood, business and being a strong role model for working mothers. Third placed Priyanka Chopra-Jonas was once again the most famous Indian on the planet and carried on breaking ground internationally, including with big budget series Citadel, Hollywood film Love Again, humanitarian work and lighting up the red carpet at international events.Fourth placed Diljit Dosanjh confirmed himself as the biggest Punjabi star on the planet with stunning work as an actor and singer, which included cinema, major crossover international.
Aneesha Madhok on her Hollywood film Bully High: Wins best Actress in Mumbai Int'l Film Festival

Actress Aneesha Madhok is on cloud nine since her film Bully High released! The film got an amazing response from the audience and good reviews from critics. Aneesha won Best Actress in the Mumbai International Film Festival. Bully High was in the theatres in the USA right next to the big films like Barbie and Oppenheimer. So, I am really grateful that I am in theatres in America while I sit in India and interview,” she says.
Aneesha plays the role of Maryam, who faces discrimination, and she defeats violence with love. Talking about how she managed the role, she says, “For the role of “Maryam” I went completely by method as I wanted to embody that pain before I even started shooting. The camera reads the eyes and eyes are the window to the soul so for me acting is about being as real as one can be which means not acting.”
She also got the chance to work with Hollywood superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger's son Joseph Baena. “I enjoyed working with Joseph. He is a natural! He carries himself with a lot of confidence and we vibed on set. I am now in India and I’m looking forward to adding value to the craft of movie magic. I’m heavily influenced by Iranian cinema considering I speak Persian and I aim to reflect that subtlety and nuance in the films we shall now see. Art mirrors reality and can impact lives- I’m all for it.
BB 17: Rinku Dhawan nominates Ankita Lokhande, labelling her as a pretentious player

Big Boss 17 has almost completed it’s 2nd month and one more nomination special week started. This week BB went back to its classic style of the nominations process. He called all contestants in the confession room and asked for their nominations. After a long time, this time nominations were not backed up with any task. Consistent Rinku Dhawan, who is probably the only contestant in the house who is playing the game logically, nominated Ankita Lokhande this week. Rinku and Ankita have never been involved in any kind of verbal spat. But they are not friends either. During the nomination announcement, Rinku first took Khanzaadi’s name, she stated that Khanzaadi just doesn’t deserve to be in the house. Next, she nominated Ankita Lokhande. She says,”I have tried to establish a connection with Ankita in the house and also chatted with her a couple of times but she never came across to me as a genuine person to me. She is playing pretentious in the BB house. I am an actress and I know when genuine emotions are being displayed . I am not trying to think too much about it but it comes back to me again and again.”
Rinku also saved herself from nominations this week. Most of the housemates don’t have a valid reason to nominate her. Rinku’s best buddy from the house is Munawar with whom she spends a lot of time. Rinku who is a sharp observer of people’s behaviour in the house, also pointed out an important thing about Isha Malviya. While talking to Aishwarya Sharma Rinku says,”Isha was provoking Vicky to fight with Abhishek.” To this Aishwarya says that she's getting overconfident because she got praised by Salman Khan. Rinku says it will take her down.

Somy Ali talks about NMT’s Holiday Party

Somy Ali, who works to rehabilitate the victims of domestic violence and rape through her NGO No More Tears (NMT), organises a holiday party for the children she saves every year. The idea behind the party is to make the kids feel special around Christmas.Talking about the party held this year, she says, “I decided to celebrate the holiday season for all my children in 2007. We call it a Holiday Party because we have mothers and their children from all faiths, or lack thereof. The concept came to me when I realised that the children, who have been abused, do not have the ability to get what they wish from Santa. Their moms being divorced or having a protection order in place are many times limited financially. This made me want to do something immediately. Initially the party would take place in my home till 2013, but as the numbers of children increased and also there being a safety issue for myself and everyone else, we picked various venues to have the party each year. All that matters to me is that every child present gets a gift and they go home with a smile. There is nothing that can compare to that happiness I receive and a hug in return is all I need to fill my heart with incredible gratitude.”
She adds, “It went very well and it’s all because of our board of directors and donors. In fact, our treasurer flies in from Tennessee each year and organizes the entire party. The venue is a synagogue also donated each year thanks to our OBGYN and his wife. Before their sons went off to college they used to organise everything. While our other board members arrange for presents for the children and food thus, we owe it to many people involved. Everyone from our NGO has a role and without them this party would not be possible.”
She adds, “There is no financial fundraising aspect attached to this party. It’s pure arts and crafts, games, food, and the best part for my children is giving them gifts. For me to know and realise that each year there are children who have suffered immense trauma and don't have a way to get presents rips my heart into pieces. And also, it makes me realise how much we complain about trivial stuff when there are legitimate problems such as lack of food or the inability to get a doll for a little girl. I make sure that we make that happen. And once again we did it. We made over 200 children enjoy themselves and go home with a present. This is why NMT is worth every minute of my life. Bringing happiness to others is the best way for me to feel happy. More people should give that mindset a shot and see the indescribable euphoria it brings in return.”
She adds that she is very grateful to all those who make this party possible. “I would like to thank our board of directors and the volunteers who helped out throughout the party. And, of course the synagogue plus all those who donated toys for the children. Looking forward to 2024 and doing it all over again for our children. Nothing can break this tradition that NMT has carried for 16 years.”
