External Affairs Minister Dr. Jaishankar on Wednesday said that consensus, mutual understanding and self-interest would play a key role on the enforcement of rules agreed upon by middle powers. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, Dr. Jaishankar emphasized that the era of a country dictating terms to others through threats is over. He noted that the world is moving towards a new international order, with a wider range of countries playing a greater role in global affairs. He added the current transition should not be seen as a shift from order to disorder but as the evolution of a different kind of order. He said India was not comfortable being described as a ‘middle power’.“More than a middle power, in a way, we are powers in the middle. What would really define a middle power? To use the Prime Minister’s words, the countries who have the power to empower,” EAM Jaishankar said.
India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar says he sees India as a “power in the middle” rather than a “middle power.” Jaishankar, who was speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, notes that India is the most populous country in the world and has a huge GDP, so using the term “middle power” is self-limiting. https://t.co/gZHlkzPPes ????: Bloomberg

The External Affairs Minister emphasized that India is the world’s most populous country with a GDP of around four trillion dollars and has significant growth potential. Describing the current international environment as a “world of choke points”, he said countries could use their control over critical resources and financial mechanisms to exert pressure on others.
