Axis Bank is currently the first Indian bank to support Apple Pay. RuPay cards are not eligible for the service at launch. Apple has also held discussions with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, though commercial agreements with the two lenders have not yet been finalised, according to agency reports.“India is home to a dynamic and digitally savvy population that continues to embrace a cashless future while expecting the highest standards of security and privacy,” Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said.
Users can add eligible Axis Bank cards through the Apple Wallet app or the Axis Bank mobile app. Once added, Apple Pay can be used for payments in stores, supported apps and online platforms using an iPhone, Apple Watch or iPad.For in-store payments, users can authenticate transactions through Face ID, Touch ID or their device passcode without entering a card PIN or OTP.Eligible iPhones include the iPhone XR and later models running iOS 18 or later. Apple Pay is also available on Apple Watch Series 6 and later running watchOS 11 or later.
At launch, Apple Pay is accepted by merchants and services including Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg and Zomato, with more merchants expected to be added. The launch comes as India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) dominates the country’s digital payments landscape.
