Democrats have now seized control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, taking charge of the US Congress in a major setback for President Donald Trump. Earlier, Trump spoke to CBS News and congratulated Democrats on their victories saying that the two sides will work things out for the final two years of his term in office. “Otherwise, I'd just veto everything,” he said. Democrats have taken control of the US Congress after picking up five Senate seats in the 2026 midterm elections, as well as more than a half-dozen House districts.
It was also a big night for Democrats at the statehouse level. The party will have the majority of governorships in the U.S. for the first time in 16 years after flipping at least five from Republican control. The latest to be called was Nevada, where Aaron Ford denied former Republican Joe Lombardo a second term. No win was more shocking than Texas, where Republican Greg Abbott was denied a fourth term in office. Gina Hinojosa became the first Democratic governor in Texas since the mid-1990s and the first Latina governor of Texas.
A Democratic majority could trigger more debate and legislative activity on tariffs, healthcare, the cost of living and curbs on presidential war powers. Whether any of it becomes law would hinge on the final size of the margins, Senate procedure and how Trump responds. The results dramatically shrink U.S. President Donald Trump's power for his final two years in office by forcing him to rely on Democrats to get work done through Congress.
The elections were a nationwide verdict on Trump's turbulent second term, with discontent over living costs, tariffs and the US war against Iran, which has driven fuel prices sharply higher, weighing on Republicans as the president's approval ratings languish near record lows. Most voters appear to blame Trump's administration for high costs and want Congress to impose more checks on him, according to The AP Voter Poll.
At least 17 women will be U.S. governors in 2027 — a record. The total includes Republicans Sarah Huckabee Sanders, re-elected in Arkansas, and Tennessee's Marsha Blackburn, who left the U.S. Senate. It also includes Rhode Island's Helena Foulkes, known in Canadian business circles as the second-last CEO of the Hudson's Bay Co.
