At least 45 people are feared to have died after a bus carrying Umrah pilgrims collided with a diesel tanker near Medina. Around 42 of those who died were Indian nationals, according to local media in Saudi Arabia. Most passengers on the bus were from Hyderabad in Telangana, Khaleej Times reported. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragic bus accident in Saudi Arabia involving several Indian Umrah pilgrims near Medinah. In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Deeply saddened by the accident in Medinah involving Indian nationals. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the swift recovery of all those injured. Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are providing all possible assistance. Our officials are also in close contact with Saudi Arabian authorities.”
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy took immediate note of the tragic incident and directed Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy to urgently gather comprehensive details. Responding to preliminary inputs indicating that residents of Hyderabad may be among those affected, the Chief Minister instructed top officials to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Saudi Embassy to ensure that necessary relief measures are initiated without delay.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said he contacted two Hyderabad-based travel agencies and shared passengers’ details with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh to assist in identification and support efforts.

The Consulate General of India in Jeddah has also set up a 24x7 helpline for assistance. In a post on X, the mission said: “In view of a tragic bus accident near Madina, Saudi Arabia, involving Indian Umrah pilgrims, a 24x7 Control Room has been set up in Consulate General of India, Jeddah.
