KBC famed tehsildar held in MP over Rs2.5 crore flood relief scam

A woman tehsildar from Madhya Pradesh, who had earlier gained recognition after appearing on the popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati, has now been arrested in connection with an alleged Rs2.5 crore flood relief scam. Amita Singh Tomar, who had won Rs50 lakh on the show, was taken into custody from Gwalior on Thursday over alleged irregularities dating back to 2021 in Baroda tehsil.Following her arrest, Tomar was produced before a court and subsequently sent to jail in neighbouring Shivpuri.
“A team led by Baroda Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Avneet Sharma arrested Tomar from her home in Gwalior's Chandravadni Naka. Tomar was the tehsildar of Vijaypur but was removed from the post by Collector Arpit Verma on Wednesday,” according to an official . The official further added that Tomar had earlier moved applications for anticipatory bail in both the High Court and the Supreme Court of India, but her pleas were rejected.
According to officials, nearly 110 individuals have been named in the FIR related to the case. So far, 22 patwaris (revenue officials) and one tehsildar have been arrested in connection with the 2021 flood relief “scam”.The case pertains to alleged embezzlement of around Rs2.5 crore, which was reportedly transferred into fake bank accounts under the guise of flood relief distribution. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
