Gujarat rain fury claims nearly 40 lives; Army, Police rescue hundreds

Flooding cripples South Gujarat and Ahmedabad; industrial hubs inundated, thousands evacuated as authorities begin relief and damage assessment.Nearly 40 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Gujarat as torrential rainfall triggered widespread flooding, inundating residential areas, industrial estates and key highways, while rescue teams evacuated thousands stranded in the worst-hit districts.
According to agency reports,the highest number of fatalities was reported from South Gujarat, with Navsari recording 23 deaths and Valsad reporting 10. One death each was reported from Tapi, Surat, Anand, Banaskantha, Sanand and Dholka. Most of the deaths were caused by drowning, electrocution or people being swept away by strong currents.


In Ahmedabad district, the Army and Gujarat Police rescued hundreds of workers trapped in flooded industrial units and warehouses along the Sarkhej-Bavla highway. Around 900 workers were evacuated from Gallops Industrial Park in Bavla, while the Army rescued more than 80 workers stranded inside an Amazon warehouse in Bagodra taluka.
Flooding in Ahmedabad has been attributed to heavy rainfall coupled with the release of water from the Sabarmati River through the Vasna barrage. Although rainfall eased in the city on Saturday, several low-lying areas, including Bopal, Ghuma, Sindhu Bhavan Road and Thaltej, remained waterlogged. Sinkholes were also reported at multiple locations.The 60-km stretch of National Highway-47 connecting Ahmedabad and Rajkot remained closed up to Bagodra for the second consecutive day due to flood damage. However, the state highway linking Ahmedabad with Viramgam through the industrial hubs of Sanand and Mandal was reopened for heavy vehicles late Saturday.

Relief Commissioner Gaurang Makwana said a total of 35 rain-related deaths had been reported over the past two days, with bodies recovered after floodwaters receded and rescue operations concluded. He said rescue operations were nearing completion, with the highest number of evacuations carried out in Navsari and Surat.

Navsari Superintendent of Police Rahul Patel said nearly 20,000 people had been rescued and shifted to safer locations in the district. He attributed the extensive flooding to overflowing Ambika, Kaveri and Purna rivers, which received runoff from the Dang, Tapi and Surat districts.
Valsad Superintendent of Police Yuvrajsinh Jadeja said over 16,500 people had been rescued and relocated to shelter homes or relatives' residences, while district authorities confirmed that four persons remained missing.Officials said more than 42,000 residents across the state had been shifted to safer places during the flooding. The Indian Coast Guard airlifted 60 shrimp farmers stranded in Navsari's Mendhar-Gandevi area, while the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) evacuated 105 people from Dholka in Ahmedabad district and rescued 120 others from flood-affected villages in Navsari.


To support relief operations, 18 NDRF teams and 32 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, along with the Army, Coast Guard and local volunteers, were deployed across the affected districts. Three NDRF teams each were stationed in Navsari and Ahmedabad.The flooding also caused extensive damage to infrastructure and livelihoods. Hundreds of roads were submerged or damaged, with over 362 roads closed in Valsad alone and repair work underway on more than 121 damaged roads in Navsari.

Thousands of cars, motorcycles and machinery in textile units across Surat, Navsari and Valsad were submerged.District administrations have now shifted focus to damage assessment and restoration. Valsad Collector Nitin Sangwan said financial assistance for affected families would begin from Monday through direct bank transfers or cash payments to compensate for losses, including damaged household items, wage losses and livestock deaths.


Meanwhile, rainfall continued in several parts of north and central Gujarat. Santalpur and Radhanpur in Patan district received 381 mm and 342 mm of rainfall respectively during the 24-hour period ending Saturday morning, while Bhabhar in Banaskantha recorded 287 mm.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Banaskantha, Patan, Surendranagar, Mehsana, Kheda, Aravalli and Sabarkantha districts on Saturday, although the alert is expected to be downgraded to orange in some areas on Sunday as authorities remain on high alert for further heavy rainfall.
