Delhi gets its fourth Master Plan

Government unveiled the Delhi Master Plan 2047 on Thursday. The Master Plan provides the long-term spatial, economic and institutional framework to transform Delhi into a globally competitive, environmentally resilient and inclusive capital. It will combine economic dynamism, technological innovation and high standards of liveability while preserving its rich historical and cultural heritage. The Master Plan for Delhi 2047 aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, aims to transform the National Capital into a world-class, inclusive and economically vibrant city for nearly 3.2 crore people. This is Delhi’s fourth Master Plan, after the ones of 1962, 2001 and 2021, and will be implemented by the Delhi Development Authority under the central government. Delhi contributes to 4% to India’s gross dometic product, the plan's document said.
Addressing the event, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal said that approximately 30 to 40 lakh new flats will be added in the national capital over the coming years, with a significant number of them being standard residential units. He said that the objective is to cater to the housing demands of the city’s vast population. If the plan proceeds as intended, a large number of people will have access to new housing options. The Minister noted that the Delhi Master Plan 2047 will be a landmark initiative designed to support the capital’s growing population and foster comprehensive development. He said a Transit Oriented Development TOD policy has also been prepared specifically to strengthen the Public Transport Corridor. A 62 KM cycle track will also be developed.
During the event, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu said, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sapt-Dhara’, Master Plan for Delhi 2047 lays a robust roadmap for vertical growth, transit-oriented development, quality housing, knowledge, education and medical hubs, while preserving Delhi’s rich cultural heritage. He said this planning framework will translate into visible outcomes that enhance ease of living and build a more sustainable, vibrant and future-ready Delhi.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, People of the national capital were waiting for this masterplan. She said Delhi is spread across one thousand 484 square kilometres, and within that, it carries many limitations of its own. But keeping those limitations in mind, the plan has been designed to ensure holistic development of the entire city, covering rural areas, unauthorised colonies, and planned areas alike. Ms Gupta said urban development has also been planned while taking into account Delhi’s growing transport needs and pollution challenges. She said housing for every class is also one of the key highlights of this Master Plan.
