BJP minister Nandita Garlosa joins Congress ahead of Assam polls

In a significant political development weeks ahead of the Assam Assembly Elections 2026, BJP leader and state minister Nandita Garlosa on Sunday joined the Congress after being denied a ticket by the BJP. Garlosa, who served as Assam’s sports and youth welfare minister, joined the Congress in Haflong. A photograph shared by the Assam Congress media team showed her formally joining the party in the presence of party leader Nirmal Langthasa and other leaders. She had represented the Haflong constituency in the outgoing Assembly. The BJP has replaced her with newcomer Rupali Langthasa for the upcoming polls.
The Congress said it had earlier fielded its state unit general secretary, Nirmal Langthasa, from the seat. However, he agreed to give up the ticket to Garlosa in the “greater public interest”.“We are very happy to announce that Smt Nandita Garlosa has joined the Congress party. She has been the voice of Dima Hasao for the last five years, and she has always stood for her beliefs and principles,” the party said in a statement.Targeting the BJP, the Congress alleged that the state minister “paid the price” for her stance, claiming that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was “only interested in selling tribal land to large corporations”.

Garlosa is now set to contest from the Haflong constituency in Dima Hasao district in the upcoming elections to the 126-member Assembly, scheduled to be held on April 9, with counting of votes on May 4.Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Garlosa’s residence in Haflong on Sunday, though neither leader commented on the details of the meeting.
