2 children killed in suspected bomb attack by Kuki insurgents in Manipur

In a tragic setback to ongoing peace efforts, two minors, including a five-month-old baby boy, were killed in a suspected bomb attack allegedly carried out by Kuki insurgents in Manipur’s Bishnupur district in the early hours of Tuesday.According to police sources, the attack occurred around 1 a.m. at a residence in Moirang Tronglaobi village. The children were asleep alongside their mother when a suspected projectile struck the house, triggering a powerful explosion that claimed their lives instantly. The blast also caused significant damage to the structure, leaving nearby residents shaken as they rushed to assist the injured.

Bishnupur district shares a volatile boundary with Churachandpur district, a Kuki-dominated area, and has witnessed intermittent tensions amid the ongoing ethnic conflict in the state.Security forces have since cordoned off the area, with reinforcements deployed across the sensitive belt to prevent further escalation. Surveillance operations and combing exercises are underway in adjoining hill regions, while authorities continue to monitor other vulnerable villages along the hill-valley divide.Meanwhile, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) denied any involvement of Kuki groups in the attack, issuing a statement rejecting the allegations.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited a hospital in Imphal, where the injured mother is undergoing treatment. Condemning the incident, Singh termed it a “barbaric act” and an “assault on humanity.”“This barbaric act is an outright assault on humanity and a direct attempt to derail the hard-earned peace in Manipur. Those responsible will be identified and dealt with firmly under the law,” the Chief Minister said in a social media post.He further assured that the government remains committed to safeguarding citizens and maintaining peace and stability, urging people to remain united against forces attempting to disrupt harmony. The attack comes amid renewed efforts by the state government to resolve the ethnic conflict between Meitei and Kuki communities that has persisted since May 2023. Chief Minister Singh, who assumed office on February 4, has recently engaged with Kuki leaders in Guwahati to explore pathways toward reconciliation and resettlement of displaced persons.
However, Kuki groups have maintained that any resettlement process must follow a political resolution. They continue to demand a separate administrative arrangement in the form of a Union Territory comprising Kuki-majority districts.Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also condemned the attack, calling it “horrific” and stressing the need for enhanced vigilance and timely intervention to protect civilians.“Such an act against innocent civilians, especially children, is beyond condemnable. Authorities must ensure those responsible are brought to justice and strengthen measures to prevent such tragedies,” he said in a post on X.
