Congress has alleged that former PM Indira Gandhi, who played a pivotal role in the 1971 war, was ignored at the Vijay Diwas function held in Delhi to commemorate India’s thumping victory over Pakistan. In a tweet Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has ripped into the "misogynist BJP government" after it seemed to skip any mention of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during Vijay Diwas celebrations.
Our first and only woman Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi is being left out of the misogynist BJP government’s Vijay Diwas celebrations. This, on the 50th anniversary of the day that she led India to victory and liberated Bangladesh...1/2 pic.twitter.com/Ymlm57Ji7e

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, too, attacked the government on the issue. Indira Gandhi was at the head of the Congress government in power during the 1971 war. Vijay Diwas is observed to commemorate India's victory in the 1971 war and the Liberation of Bangladesh. The year 2021 is being observed as Swarnim Vijay Varsh to commemorate 50 years of India's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. Earlier, both Houses of Parliament paid tribute to the soldiers who had died in the war. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said soldiers' sacrifices would "inspire future generations" and Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu praised their "display of dauntless courage".
