Lok Sabha MP Gautam Gambhir on Saturday requested party president J P Nadda to relieve him of political duties so that he can focus on his upcoming cricket commitments.The parliamentarian from East Delhi also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for giving him an opportunity to serve the people."I have requested Hon'ble party president J P Nadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi ji and Home Minister Amit Shah ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!," Gambhir said on X.

Gambhir's decision to quit politics comes amid reports that he may not get a ticket for the upcoming 2024 polls.Gambhir, had joined the BJP in March 2019 and since then has become a prominent face of the party in Delhi. He won the East Delhi seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by a substantial margin of 6,95,109 votes. Gambhir will be occupied in the coming months due to his commitments in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he is serving as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a team he led to two IPL titles as a captain.Gambhir captained the Kolkata-based franchise from 2011-17 and led them to the IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. The announcement of Gambhir's return to KKR was made official on November 21, 2023.
