A premier Kalaripayattu Academy was inaugurated at Bharat Nivas in Puducherry. Kalaripayattu is an ancient Kerala martial art. The inauguration ceremony, held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, was graced by distinguished guests Dr. Jayanthi Ravi, Secretary, Auroville Foundation; Dr. Nirima Oza, Governing Board Member of Auroville Foundation; and Janmejay Mohanty, Trustee of Bharat Nivas and Guru Lakshman ji. The event was well-attended by Aurovilians, ashramites, and senior officials from the Auroville Foundation, including Dr. Seetharaman, OSD, Auroville Foundation, and other esteemed guests.
Bharat Kalari offers a comprehensive platform for enthusiasts to delve into the world of Kalaripayattu, an ancient Indian martial art that seamlessly integrates physical movements, meditation, and breath control. Under the expert guidance of Lakshman Guruji, the academy's in-charge, students will have the opportunity to explore the nuances of this traditional art form, fostering physical and mental well-being, discipline, and self-awareness.
By establishing Bharat Kalari, Bharat Nivas reaffirms its commitment to nurturing artistic and cultural excellence in Auroville, providing a unique space for individuals to engage with India's rich cultural heritage. The academy aims to become a hub for Kalaripayattu enthusiasts, practitioners, and researchers, promoting cross-cultural exchange and understanding.

Bharat Nivas is conducting various events, including dance, music, martial arts, literature festivals, tango festivals, Margazhi festivals, and Auroville festivals, as it is the biggest venue in Auroville. Since the new trustees were assigned by the Auroville Foundation two and a half years ago, Bharat Nivas has been offering regular cultural programs on campus. With around 7,000 visitors passing through Bharat Nivas daily, in weekends more than 10,000, the organization is committed to providing the best services related to Indian classical dance, drama, and international programs.As Bharat Nivas is situated in the International Township, it not only provides opportunities for Indian programs but also extends a warm welcome to international programs.
