The main accused arrested in the rape and murder incident in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, has died in an encounter during a crime reconstruction. Pravash Mondal, the prime suspect, allegedly snatched a service firearm from a police officer at around 12:45 AM on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. He fired one round and tried to flee the scene. Following an ensuing shootout, the accused was severely injured and was declared dead on arrival at the Baruipur Subdivisional Hospital. Pravash Mondal was arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl. The three other arrested are at present in police custody. The west Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul says, "There is a zero-tolerance policy against crime, and it will be implemented just as the Chief Minister has said. Within 24 hours, all the accused whose names appeared in the FIR in the Baruipur case have been apprehended."

Meanwhile TMC has opposed the encounter. Party MP Mahua Moitra says, "What has happened is absolutely unacceptable in any civilized country. We are not a bloodthirsty nation. This is not blood lust. We have a rule of law. It is very important for people to understand that this is not about divine justice. That today you accuse a person, you put him in custody and you shoot him dead that day is not justice. This is the rule of the jungle.
