Cauvery issue:'Cheap politics won't help': TN CM Vijay breaks silence

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Friday said that it was he who proposed holding talks with neighbouring Karnataka on Cauvery issue considering some hope for a positive outcome. The chief minister declared in the Assembly that he did not wish to indulge in cheap politics on the Cauvery issue. Responding to the Leader of Opposition Udhyanidhi Stalin, who raised the Cauvery issue, Vijay traced the way Tamil Nadu had handled the issue since 1969-- from considering dialogue to sticking to legal recourse.Vijay also said the Cauvery dispute needed to be handled with utmost care and stressed that the state remained committed to pursuing legal remedies. "We are firm on dealing with the Cauvery issue legally. There is no change in that stand," he said.Vijay said even countries that are sworn enemies hold dialogue to resolve disputes, and that he was willing to face criticism if it helped protect Tamil Nadu's interests.

He said there was no need to convene an all-party meeting over the Mekedatu dam issue, asserting that his government had already conveyed its stand to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and would not compromise on the state's rights over the Cauvery river waters.
