Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that SEMICON 2.0 is expected to generate around one lakh crore rupees investment into the semiconductor industry in the coming times. Addressing the media at SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, Vaishnaw on Thursday said that India’s design capability is known across the world. He said that the approach under SEMICON 2.0 will be to promote semiconductor design companies. He noted that the SEMICON 2.0 is also expected to generate up to one lakh employment opportunities. Highlighting the second pillar of SEMICON 2.0 – Machines and Materials, the Minister said that many machine makers and capital equipment makers are participating in the event and are looking to set up their bases in India. He said that those engaged in manufacturing will have the opportunity to connect with the precision manufacturing ecosystem developing in the country. Vaishnaw said,Semicon 1.0 was all about setting the foundation, making sure that we learn to walk. Semicon 2.0 is more about getting the ecosystem in place.

Vaishnaw also informed that under SEMICON 1.0, around four hundred universities and institutes are already teaching chip design to their students. He said the government is now looking forward to upgrading these courses and enabling students to undertake systems design after learning chip design. He said the government is looking forward to scale the technical training by partnering with industries and institutes such as the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan. He said these institutions can help set up facilities that can train technicians. As part of SEMICON India 2026, 11 MoU exchanges and announcements were undertaken covering semiconductor manufacturing, packaging, materials, equipment, design, talent development and related ecosystem capabilities.SEMICON India 2026 which runs till September 19th, features more than 600 participating companies and is expected to attract around 50,000 visitors, with representatives from 52 countries,
