US has permanent control of Greenland security: Trump, Denmark hails

President Donald Trump claims the US has reached a deal with Denmark granting it “permanent control” over Greenland’s security “and all other needs”. The announcement comes more than a year after the US president threatened to seize the self-governing Arctic territory, which is part of Denmark. Those threats roiled the NATO security alliance that Washington and Copenhagen are part of. Trump said the deal will prevent countries such as Russia and China from setting up military bases or making sensitive investments in Greenland. Denmark and Greenland have welcomed the agreement. The new agreement does not mean Greenland has been handed over to the US. Instead, it defines Washington’s security and military role on the island. The deal bars US adversaries from establishing a military presence or making “sensitive investments” in Greenland without US approval, said Trump.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement recognises the “sovereignty and territorial integrity” of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination. According to Denmark, the deal is expected to be signed during next week’s United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York. Copenhagen has stressed that it retains sovereignty over Greenland, and this deal will still need to be ratified in the Danish and Greenland parliaments.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Saturday that the potential signing meant "next week could be a good week". "A long period of uncertainty will hopefully be replaced by a binding agreement that strengthens security in the Arctic and North Atlantic," the foreign minister said in a social media post. He added that the deal, which he said respected Denmark's "red lines", was "important" in light of a changed security situation.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the deal with the United States "strengthens" the territory's security.
