Kamalpreet Kaur earned direct qualification to Women's Discus final event with a 64m throw. Seema Punia failed to qualify, and registered 60.57 as her best attempt during qualification. Also, Amit Panghal faced an early exit in the Round of 16, losing to Yuberjen Martinez in the Men's Boxing Fly (48-52kg) category. Other than Panghal, archer Atanu Das lost to Japan's Takaharu Furukawa in the men's individual 1/8 eliminations. India shooters Anjum Moudgil and Tejaswini Sawant will be in action in 50m Rifle 3 positions qualifiers. PV Sindhu will face Tai Tzu-Ying in the women's singles semifinal. Boxer Pooja Rani will also be in action. Kaur took everyone by surprise, hurling the discus 65.06m, comfortably breaching the Olympic qualification mark of 63.50m and shattering the previous national record of 64.76 set by Krishna Poonia in 2012.
Meanwhile, USA Gymnast Biles withdraws from vault and uneven bars. In a statement it was said that after further consultation with medical staff, Simone Biles has decided to withdraw from the event finals for vault and the uneven bars. She will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether to compete in the finals for floor exercise and balance beam.
