In Tami Nadu, at least 21 people are feared dead following a blast at a firecracker factory in V. Muthulingapuram in Virudhunagar district on Sunday. Six people were seriously injured and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. The incident occurred when labourers were shifting inflammable chemical materials inside the factory. A total of 30 workers were present in four rooms at the unit at the time of the explosion.
The blast took place at the ‘Vanaja’ fireworks factory, owned by Muthumanickam, located in Kattanarpatti under the Vachakarapatti police station limits. Officials from the police and fire departments said four of the injured remain in critical condition and are undergoing treatment at the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed grief over the incident and said he had directed two ministers to immediately visit the site to oversee relief efforts.
