In fresh blow to former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, her party's MP Koel Mallick resigned from Rajya Sabha on Thursday and met Union Minister Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi. Mallick, who is also an actor in Bengali film industry, took oath as Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha in April this year. Mallick wrote to Rajya Sabha chairman CP Radhakrishnan, expressing that resigns as an MP. “I do hereby resign from the membership of Rajya Sabha, which may please be accepted with immediate effect,” she wrote in the letter. “I convey my sincere gratitude to your Excellency, Hon'ble Deputy Chairman and all functionaries of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat extending all help and cooperation during my tenure as a Member of the Rajya Sabha,” she added.

Koel, daughter of veteran actor Ranjit Mallick, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha ahead of the Bengal elections along with singer-politician Babul Supriyo, former Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar, and senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy. Trinamool Congress has witnessed turmoil after the defeat in the state polls, with 20 of its Lok Sabha MPs having "merged with the National Citizens Party of India".
