A leader of the Trinamool Congress, Hafijul Molla Pradhan, has been arrested in South 24 Parganas district on Saturday for allegedly threatening voters, officials said.According to information, Molla, associated with the Deuli Gram Panchayat, was accused of openly issuing threats to political opponents during a public meeting in Jibantala area.Police acted on the directions of the poll body and arrested the TMC leader, initiating legal proceedings against him. The ECI had sought immediate action following reports that Molla attempted to intimidate voters ahead of the elections.Sources said Molla, who serves as the head of the Deuli-1 gram panchayat in the Canning area, allegedly made a controversial remark during a gathering in Jivantala, warning that a “steam roller” would roll after the vote count—an apparent reference interpreted as a threat to opposition supporters.

The Election Commission subsequently directed law enforcement authorities to take strict action, emphasising its commitment to ensuring free and fair elections. Police have confirmed that necessary legal steps are being taken in the matter.Reacting to the development, Amit Malviya of the Bharatiya Janata Party said the arrest reflects a firm stance by the Election Commission against attempts to intimidate voters. In a social media post, he claimed that action against such individuals would help ensure a transparent electoral process and urged citizens to participate in voting.
