Six persons lost their lives after the wire of a cargo ropeway snapped at the Pavagadh Hill temple in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district on Saturday, police said.Superintendent of Police Haresh Dudhat confirmed the fatalities, adding that police and fire brigade teams had rushed to the site and launched rescue and relief operations.Located at an altitude of nearly 800 metres, the temple is a prominent pilgrimage site that attracts around 2.5 million visitors annually. Pilgrims generally ascend the hill either by climbing nearly 2,000 steps or using cable cars.
Officials further clarified that the passenger ropeway remained closed since morning owing to inclement weather. The accident occurred in the cargo ropeway, which is used for transportation of materials.Pavagadh Hill, rising from Champaner, has a plateau at 1,471 feet and is home to the revered Goddess Kali temple, drawing devotees from across Gujarat and beyond,according to information.Authorities said further details will be shared once the rescue operation is complete and the cause of the accident is ascertained.
