Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday extended an invitation to European investors to participate in India’s growing infrastructure and green transition sectors. The proposal was made during a meeting with a delegation led by European Commissioner for Budget and Administration, Johannes Hahn in New Delhi.
The Ministry of Finance, in a post on social media platform "X", emphasized that both India and the European Union (EU) have witnessed significant advancements in their bilateral relationship in recent years. The post noted, “Both sides appreciated significant developments in India-EU relations. @JHahnEU highlighted the EU’s initiative of 'NextGenerationEU Green Bonds' for raising funds for green and sustainable investments. FM @nsitharaman invited European investors to explore expanding opportunities in the Indian infrastructure sector and green transition industry.”
During the meeting, Commissioner Hahn outlined the EU’s 'NextGenerationEU Green Bonds' initiative, which aims to raise funds to support green and sustainable investments within EU member states. The funds are earmarked for nine key categories, including energy efficiency, clean energy, and climate change adaptation, according to information.
The 'NextGenerationEU Green Bonds' are part of the EU’s broader economic recovery package, designed to support member nations in their post-COVID recovery efforts while promoting environmental sustainability. This aligns with India’s own objectives of fostering green energy initiatives and sustainable infrastructure development, offering a range of potential investment opportunities.
Sitharaman’s call to European investors reflects India's commitment to transitioning to a greener economy, a move that presents substantial opportunities for collaboration and growth in sectors critical to both regions. With global momentum building around renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure, India’s infrastructure development and green transition projects are well-positioned to attract long-term international investments, noted experts.
