Shreyas Iyer named T20I captain, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gets call-up

The BCCI on Saturday announced Indian men's cricket team for the T20I series to Ireland and England and the Asian Games 2026. Shreyas Iyer took over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, and wonder kid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi found a place in the squad for the twin tour of Ireland and England. At 15 years and 71 days old, Sooryavanshi becomes the youngest ever player to feature in an Indian cricket team, surpassing the long-standing record held by the great Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar was 16 years and 205 days when he made his Test debut against Pakistan at Karachi on November 15, 1989. 

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's rapid rise over the past year has earned him a place in the national squad at just 15. The teenage opener lit up IPL 2026, smashing records on his way to a remarkable season. He finished with 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.31, including a tournament-record 72 sixes, to claim the Orange Cap, Emerging Player award and MVP honours..
India will begin the tour with two T20Is against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28 before heading to England for a five-match series. The opening game will be played in Chester-le-Street on July 1, while the final T20I is scheduled for Southampton on July 11.

The Indian Cricket Board has named a full-strength squad for Asian Games 2026 set to be held at Aichi–Nagoya in Japan. Shreyas Iyer is leading the Indian team which has Jasprit Bumrah and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi among others.The Asian Games will be played between September 23 and October 8 later this year.

The announcement marks a significant shift in India's white-ball plans as the team begins building towards the next T20 World Cup cycle and the Asian Games later this year
