Worship of Maa Skandamata

The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Skandamata, the fifth form of Goddess Durga. She is the one who opens the gates of liberation, bestows supreme happiness, and fulfills all the wishes of her devotees.

Lord Skanda, also known as Kumar Kartikeya, became the commander of the gods in the great battle between the gods and demons. The Puranas describe him as Kumar and Shaktidhara, praising his glory. As the mother of Lord Skanda, this divine form of Goddess Durga is revered as Skandamata.

Form of the Goddess

Maa Skandamata has four arms.

In her right lower hand, she holds a lotus flower.

In her left upper hand, she is in the boon-giving posture (Varamudra).

In her left lower hand, she also holds a lotus flower.

Her complexion is completely pure and radiant white.

She is seated on a lotus, hence she is also called Padmasana Devi.

Her vehicle is a lion.

In her idol, child-form Lord Skanda is seated on her lap.

Significance of Worship

The scriptures mention the great significance of worshipping on the fifth day of Navratri.

On this day, the practitioner’s external activities and mental disturbances are pacified, leading them towards pure consciousness.

The devotee becomes free from worldly bondages and is completely absorbed in the meditation of the Mother.

By her grace, all desires of the devotee are fulfilled, and they experience supreme peace and happiness.

On this day, the devotee’s mind is established in the Vishuddhi Chakra.

The worship of Maa Skandamata holds a unique significance – along with her worship, the child form of Lord Skanda is also worshipped. This special feature belongs only to her form.

As the presiding deity of the Solar System, her devotees become blessed with divine radiance and brilliance. An unseen divine aura surrounds them, protecting their well-being and sustaining their prosperity.

Worship Mantra

या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ स्कंदमाता रूपेण संस्थिता।

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम:।।

“O Divine Mother, who resides in all beings in the form of Skandamata, I bow to you again and again. O Mother, please grant me freedom from all sins.”

The worship of Maa Skandamata makes the path of liberation easily accessible to the devotee. She nurtures higher consciousness and fills life with divinity.

We should strive to purify our minds with deep concentration and surrender at her feet. Truly, there is no better way to cross the ocean of worldly sorrows and attain liberation.
