Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has criticised those who have been raising the issue of educational qualification of leaders as wasting time on matters that can wait, while the country faces more critical issues that need attention. Pawar, while responding to a question to reporters on Sunday in Mumbai, said matters like unemployment, law and order and inflation need attention and leaders may do well to desist from going after issues that can wait or are even non-issues. "Today, the college degree question is being asked often. What is your degree, what is my degree. Are these political issues?" Pawar said
Several opposition leaders in the centre including Uddhav Thackeray and Arvind Kejriwal have taken a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his college degrees. Kejriwal was fined Rs 25,000 by the Gujarat High Court for bringing up the matter when the information was already available in the public domain, while Thackeray had asked "which college doesn't want to come out to feel proud of the fact that their college is where the Prime Minister studied".
In a dig at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Sunday said that one should not be boastful about one's degree and some people remain illiterate despite being educated in IIT. Saxena was asked about Kejriwal's comments targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his educational qualifications and questioning the genuineness of his degrees. "I have heard the comments made by the honourable chief minister in the Assembly. One should never be boastful about their degree. A degree is only a receipt of education but real education lies in your knowledge and behaviour. "I have seen the kind behaviour exhibited over the last few days. It has been proved how some people remain illiterate despite being educated in IIT," the LG said.
