A sessions court in Kolkata’s Sealdah has sentenced prime accused Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment in the RG Kar rape and murder case. Sessions Judge Anirban Das also held that the state government will have to pay the victim’s family compensation of 17 lakh rupees. Along with this, the court has also fined Rs50,000 to the accused. Sanjoy Roy was declared guilty in the case by the court on Saturday last week. The body of the PGT doctor was recovered from a seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College on 9th August last year. Sanjoy Roy was arrested by the Kolkata Police on 10th August. Later, he was handed over to the CBI, and the CBI has charged Sanjoy Roy in the case.
Judge Das said the crime did not fall under the "rarest of the rare" category as justification for not giving death penalty to the convict. The sentence was passed after the judge heard the final statements of the convict and his counsels placed in self-defence as well as those of the victim’s family, and the CBI.Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was held guilty under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
