In Karnataka, the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, a legislation aimed at restructuring the governance of the city, officially comes into force from Thursday, May 15. With this, the Karnataka government has begun the process of transitioning power from the existing Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to a more decentralised and coordinated governance system under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). In a notification issued on Wednesday, the Urban Development Department confirmed the implementation date. The Greater Bengaluru Authority will be headed by the Chief Minister in an ex-officio capacity, with the Bengaluru Development Minister acting as the vice-chairperson. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of each corporation will have fixed terms of 30 months.

The act was passed recently by both houses of the state legislature, despite opposition from the BJP. The Greater Bengaluru Governance Act proposes a dramatic overhaul of the BBMP. The core proposal is - Splitting the current civic body into a maximum of seven municipal corporations, each managing a section of the Greater Bengaluru Area.

Each of these new city corporations will comprise up to 150 wards, and the region will adopt a three-tier governance model: Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA),City Corporations andWard Committees.The implementation of the GBG Act promises a sweeping transformation of Bengaluru’s civic landscape, with several key reforms in how the city is managed.
