Raksha Bandhan being celebrated across India

Raksha Bandhan, the festival of the special bond between brothers and sisters, is being celebrated on Friday, August 28,2026 across the country. On this occasion, sisters tie colourful Rakhi around the wrist of their brothers and pray for their prosperity, health and well-being. In return, brothers pledge to protect and support their sisters and present them gifts.Raksha Bandhan symbolises the bond of love, affection and protection between brothers and sisters.

President Droupadi Murmu has conveyed her greetings to all Indians living in the country and abroad on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan today. In her message on social media, the President said that the sacred tradition of Raksha Bandhan has been an integral part of Indian culture and spiritual traditions since ancient times. The President said that over time, Raksha Bandhan has become a cherished social festival, symbolising the bond of love and protection between brothers and sisters.
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have greeted the people on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan today. In a social media post, Mr Radhakrishnan wished that the joyous occasion strengthens the bonds of love, affection and togetherness, and inspires everyone to uphold the values of compassion, harmony and mutual respect.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended greetings to the people on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and wished that the bond of love, affection and mutual trust symbolised by the festival remains forever unbreakable. In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Heartfelt wishes on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. May this sacred festival bring happiness, prosperity, and success into all your lives. May the bond of love, affection, and mutual trust remain forever unbreakable—that is my heartfelt wish.”
The festival is observed annually on Purnima, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana, which generally falls in August. Families also mark the occasion by exchanging sweets, gifts and greetings. The festival is primarily celebrated in India and Nepal.
