INS Taragiri to be commissioned today, boost eastern maritime power

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to commission the advanced stealth frigate INS Taragiri into the Indian Navy on Friday at a ceremonial event in Visakhapatnam, marking a significant boost to India’s maritime capabilities on the eastern seaboard. The commissioning ceremony will be hosted by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi and is expected to highlight the growing strategic importance of India’s eastern maritime frontier amid evolving regional security dynamics and increased engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
INS Taragiri, the fourth stealth frigate under the Project 17A class, represents a major advancement in India’s naval shipbuilding programme. Weighing around 6,670 tonnes, the warship is a reflection of the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and showcases the capabilities of indigenous defence manufacturing.

Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, the frigate features a significantly reduced radar cross-section, enabling stealth operations and enhanced survivability in hostile environments. With over 75 per cent indigenous content, the vessel underscores the strength of India’s domestic industrial ecosystem, supported by more than 200 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The warship is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, allowing for high-speed and long-endurance operations. It is equipped with a sophisticated suite of weapons, including supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and advanced anti-submarine warfare systems. These capabilities are integrated through a modern combat management system, enabling swift and precise responses to emerging threats.Beyond combat roles, INS Taragiri is designed for multi-dimensional missions, including maritime security operations, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief efforts, reflecting the evolving role of naval platforms in both defence and diplomacy.
The induction of INS Taragiri reinforces the Indian Navy’s focus on enhancing operational readiness and expanding its fleet with technologically advanced, indigenously built platforms. It also aligns with India’s broader vision of becoming a self-reliant and formidable maritime power, capable of safeguarding its strategic interests across the region.
