Rahul Gandhi's speech in Lok Sabha on Monday drew a sharp reaction from the ruling government, who accused the Congress MP of making "irresponsible remarks". At a press conference, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "Leader of Opposition is a very responsible post. Rahul ji has for the first time taken responsibility, but today he made irresponsible statements."He accused Rahul Gandhi of lying about the Agnipath scheme. "Rahul has degraded the position of LoP and brought the level of politics down so much. This statement deserves condemnation in the strongest terms," he added.

Rahul Gandhi had targeted the BJP government over the Agnipath scheme for entry into the Armed Forces."Agniveer is a use and throw labour. One jawan is getting a pension, while another is not. You are creating a divide between jawans," Rahul Gandhi said.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that a request has been made to the Speaker to establish a directive for addressing unverified statements made by Members of Parliament. He also insisted that if the Leader of the Opposition is found to have lied in the House, they must face the corresponding rules and regulations.
