PDP leader and former Chief Minister of J&K Mehbooba Mufti was released late Tuesday night after being detained by the government for nearly 14 months. "Ms Mehbooba Mufti being released," Rohit Kansal, J&K Principal Secretary, tweeted. The release comes just as a deadline set by the Supreme Court, which had been approached by her daughter Iltija Mufti with a habeas corpus petition challenging her "illegal" detention, was set to expire. The J&K administration was given two weeks - till October 14 - to explain how long they intended to do so.
Mehbooba Mufti was among the several Kashmiei leaders who were detained on August 5 when the central government moved bills in Parliament to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution that accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir. While other prominent Kashmiri politicians like Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and others were released earlier this year, Mehbooba Mufti's detention was extended on several occasions. While other prominent Kashmiri politicians like Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and others were released earlier this year, Mehbooba Mufti's detention was extended on several occasions.
Later in her video massage Mufti said that the Centre's decision of August 5 was a "daylight robbery". "We all have to pledge that we will take back what was snatched illegally, undemocratically and unconstitutionally on August 5 last year. We will also have to work for the resolution of Kashmir issue for which thousands of people have laid down their lives," she said. Mehbooba also demanded the release of Kashmiri people languishing in various jails.
