French President Emmanuel Macron declared the 2024 Paralympics open on Thursday (IST) during a colourful ceremony in the heart of Paris. A total of 4,400 Paralympians, representing 167 nations, marched from Champs-Elysees to Place de la Concorde.About 50,000 people watched the ceremony in stands built around the iconic square, which is the biggest in Paris and is visible from afar because of its ancient Egyptian obelisk. Accessibility for athletes in wheelchairs was facilitated with strips of asphalt laid along the avenue and placed over the square.

Some delegations were huge -- more than 250 athletes from Brazil -- and some were tiny -- only one athlete each from Myanmar and Barbados. In a moment of pride for India, para-athletes Sumit Antil and Bhagyashri Jadhav led the Indian contingent, which is the largest ever in the nation's Paralympic history with 84 athletes in 12 different sports.India will compete in three new sports--para-cycling, para-rowing and blind judo--at the Paris Paralympics, extending the country's participation to 12 sports. Overall, 22 sports will be held in Paris in 2024.

International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons said he hoped the Paris Paralympics would start an "inclusion revolution" beyond the field of sport. The first medals handed out on Thursday will be in taekwondo, table tennis, swimming and track cycling. Athletes are grouped by impairment levels to ensure as even a playing field as possible.
