Karnataka will have Namo Bharta Rapid Rail system. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, during his Bengaluru visit, revealed plans to launch Namo Bharta Rapid Rail to link Bengaluru, Mysore and Tumkur. “Operating rapid rail between pairs of cities that are up to 200 km apart is an ideal option for frequent and efficient service,” he said. Vaishnav emphasised the system's suitability for routes like Bengaluru-Mysore (135 km) and Bengaluru-Tumkur (70 km), highlighting its potential for frequent and reliable service.
The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail is a short-distance intercity rail service designed to connect major cities within a range of 100 to 250 kilometers. Currently, the semi-high-speed rail network operates between Ghaziabad, Meerut, Ahmedabad, and Bhuj. This high-speed connectivity significantly reduces travel time between the two cities compared to conventional trains. The system is designed for frequent service, with trains running every 15 minutes on weekdays.
Each 12-coach train can accommodate 1,150 seated passengers and 2,058 standing passengers. Unlike traditional metros that primarily serve urban stations, the NaMo Bharat Rapid Rail will connect inter-city destinations, effectively linking urban centres with their surrounding areas and catering to a broader travel range.
Vaishnav also provided an update on the proposed circular railway network for Bengaluru. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this ambitious ₹23,000 crore project is expected to be finalised by December 2024. Covering 287 kilometres, this network aims to connect various suburbs around Bengaluru, significantly boosting the city’s rail capacity and alleviating congestion.
