MP Govt trying to get Orchha included in UNESCO’s World Heritage list

The Madhya Pradesh government has taken a big step to get Orchha included in UNESCO’s World Heritage list. The state government has formed a state-level committee for this. The chief secretary will head this committee. Necessary documents are being prepared to include Orchha in UNESCO’s World Heritage list during 2027-28. Last year, UNESCO’s body ICOMOS suggested that the management of Orchha’s heritage sites needs to be strengthened. This committee has been formed based on that suggestion. Senior officials from the culture, urban development, forest and public works departments are part of the committee. The Collector of Niwari and an officer from the Archaeological Survey of India will also be members. The Secretary of the Tourism Department has been made the member-secretary of this committee.
This committee will review all ongoing and upcoming projects in Orchha. This is to make sure they follow heritage conservation rules. The committee will also ensure that all departments consider heritage conservation while approving projects in Orchha. Orchha has been nominated for UNESCO’s World Heritage list for its unique Bundela Rajput and Mughal architecture. It is also known for its unique temple of Lord Ram as a king. The town has grand historical monuments along the Betwa River, like Jahangir Mahal and Raja Mahal. The Sheesh Mahal, in Orchha, a palace built in 1763 by Raja Udait Singh as a royal retreat for distinguished guests.
