Madhya Pradesh, already India’s leading state for diamonds, is now making headlines for gold. After years of exploration, geologists have confirmed the presence of significant gold traces in Jabalpur’s Mahangwa region, raising the possibility of reserves spread over nearly 100 hectares.
Excitement is running high in Sihora tehsil, particularly in the villages of Bela and Binaika, where geological teams discovered tiny gold particles during extensive sampling and excavation exercises. According to initial survey data, experts believe the potential reserves could run into lakhs of tonnes, marking a major milestone for the state’s mineral economy. For the past several weeks, teams from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) have been conducting soil sampling and chemical analysis in the Mahangwa region. Their findings confirm the existence of gold deposits alongside other minerals. Sources indicated that while preliminary evidence is strong, detailed geological surveys and feasibility studies will be required before mining can begin.
Local residents have been flocking to the site to witness the activity, with many hopeful that the discovery will create new employment and economic opportunities in the district. “Mere desh ki dharti sona ugle is becoming a reality here,” a villager remarked, reflecting the widespread enthusiasm. The discovery also aligns with Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s push to transform Madhya Pradesh into a national mining hub. The state, which already dominates India’s diamond production from the Panna mines, is also a key producer of copper concentrate, manganese, diaspore, pyrophyllite, limestone, and marble. The Mahakoshal belt, covering Jabalpur and Katni, is a well-known mining region rich in iron, copper, and manganese reserves.
If confirmed, the Jabalpur gold findings could place Madhya Pradesh alongside Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan—currently India’s leading gold-bearing states. Officials said that once the reserve estimates are finalized, a mining plan will be prepared in compliance with environmental and regulatory norms. However, environmentalists have raised concerns about the potential ecological impact, as the region around Jabalpur is also rich in biodiversity. They have urged the government to balance mining ambitions with conservation priorities. The discovery is expected to give a fresh boost to the state’s mining sector, which has been growing at a faster pace than many others, driven by both policy changes and investment drives initiated in recent years.
