The North Eastern state Manipur has got some recognition. Chief minister N. Biren Singh has announced that the famous Sirarakhong 'Hathei chilli' and Tamenglong Orange have now received the Geographical Index (GI) tag. He made the announcement while speaking at the inaugural function of the Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK) Mela, 2021, organised by the State Forest Department on Friday. Addressing the gathering, Biren Singh said that within a short span of time, Manipur has emerged as a model State for the scheme in the whole country. This is a historic milestone in history of Manipur & it will increase the income of the farmers in Manipur,he said.

Manipur Organic Mission Agency applied for GI tags for Tamenglong orange and Sirarakhong Hathei chilli in 2019. The GI status is an indication that identifies goods as produced from a particular area which has special quality attributable to its geographical origin and it has great potential to play a major role in trade and tourism.Tamenglong orange is a species of mandarin group is a unique fruit crop found mostly in Tamenglong district which contributes over 50 per cent of the state's annual production.It is famous especially for its well blended sweetness and acidic taste. Hathei chilli, one of the best varieties of chillies having its distinctive flavour and colour in the world found in Sirarakhong village in Ukhrul district.Apart from unique in its taste as well as its looks, the size, shape and the taste of Hathei chilli are quite singular.Hathei chilli thrives only in the Mahadev hills surrounding the remote Tangkhul Naga inhabited Sirarakhong village in Ukhrul district. This indigenous chilli variety is cultivated under the jhum system on the slopes.
Manipur was conferred with five national awards during the first Van Dhan Annual Awards, 2020-21 at 34th Foundation Day celebration of TRIFED, Biren Singh further stated that 41,908 women of 3320 SHGs had been benefited under the scheme in Manipur so far.
