The festival of Mahashivaratri is being celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety in India on Wednesday. A large number of devotees are visiting the most revered Somnath Mahadev temple, Nageshwar temple in Dwaraka and Sri Bhramarambha Mallikharjuna Swamy Temple in Sri Sialam, Andhra Pradesh other prominent Shiva temples in the state. Special arrangements have been made at Somnath temple to facilitate the devotees. In Somnath, the festival of Mahashivratri holds a special significance and the celebration starts at 4 am.

In Uttar Pradesh, devotees are arriving at Shiva temples across the state including Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi since morning to perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva. Special preparations have been made in Kashi for Mahashivratri. Apart from the darshan and worship, processions of seven Akharas will also be taken out in Varanasi.

In Odisha, a huge number of devotees have turned up to offer prayers and there have been queues for the last 7-8 hours. Police have made elaborate arrangements for a hassle-free experience for devotees.Khordha DM Chanchal Rana said that the number of devotees who have arrived at the Lingaraj temple Wenesday has surpassed last year's footfall. We are all prepared and have made exhaustive arrangements. Many senior officers have been deployed in large numbers and organisations have also been moved in. We are committed to ensuring a hassle-free darshan for all devotees.

Due to heavy crowds in Prayagraj, many devotees chose to visit Nashik, where they took a holy dip in the Godavari River (Nashik Gange) and offered prayers at the Shri Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga Temple on Mahashivratri.
In Tamil Nadu, a large number of people reached Rameshwaram to perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva. at Ramanathaswamy Temple. The idols of Lord Ramanathaswamy and Goddess Parvathavardhini were taken out in a grand chariot procession. Thousands of devotees from across the country participated. The celebrations began with a special Deeparadhana (lamp worship)
