French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed concern over security failures that led to violent protests across the country but rejected the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nunez amid the crisis. According to local media reports, at least 2,400 people have been arrested following the unrest, during which town halls were set on fire and hundreds of businesses were looted or damaged. The Elysee Palace, the official residence of the president of France, said Nunez had submitted his resignation on Sunday, but the President refused to accept it, citing the need for continued leadership of law enforcement during the crisis. Macron directed the Interior Minister to ensure transparency over the planning and intelligence failures that led to the violence and introduce new operational methods for security forces. The protests followed calls by labour unions, student organisations and activists.
Macron expressed anger and shame over the rioting and looting during nationwide demonstrations. The French President also announced measures to address economic concerns, including rising fuel prices and the cost of living, and pledged firm legal action against those involved in the violence.Macron vowed that top officials would "make decisions in coordination with mayors to protect our cities, public buildings, and businesses". He said that businesses that suffered would be supported and vowed there would be "full transparency" over the response by security forces to the protests.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has blamed "immigration of people" for the widespread unrest in France as violent protests broke out in Paris, Nice, Marseille and other cities over rising inflation. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said, "People with hatred in their hearts, has shattered that once great country." "Close your Borders and take control, before it is too late," the US President added.
