J&K CM hails PMGSY-I extension till March 2027

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday expressed gratitude to the Union government for extending the timeline of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana Phase I (PMGSY-I) till March 2027, a move expected to accelerate rural road connectivity across the Union Territory.
In a post shared by the Chief Minister’s Office on X, Abdullah expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan for acceding to the J&K government’s proposal, noting that the extension would significantly support the completion of critical rural road projects across the region. The decision is expected to accelerate infrastructure development in remote and difficult terrains of Jammu and Kashmir, where weather conditions and geographical challenges have often delayed project execution.

The Centre had earlier sanctioned a Rs 4,224.23 crore package for 316 road projects in Jammu and Kashmir under PMGSY for the financial year 2025–26. Officials described it as the largest-ever allocation for the Union Territory under the flagship rural road development programme. In addition, under the PMGSY-IV initiative, rural habitations with a population as low as 250 people will be connected through roads spanning a total length of 1,781.33 km, further strengthening last-mile connectivity.
Launched by the Government of India, PMGSY aims to provide all-weather road connectivity to unconnected habitations as part of a broader poverty alleviation strategy. The programme focuses on building durable road infrastructure with necessary drainage systems to ensure year-round accessibility in rural areas.According to official data, around 1.67 lakh unconnected habitations across the country remain eligible for coverage under the scheme. This involves constructing approximately 3.71 lakh km of roads for new connectivity and upgrading another 3.68 lakh km of existing routes. The extension of the PMGSY-I timeline is seen as a crucial step towards ensuring timely completion of ongoing projects in Jammu and Kashmir, enhancing access to essential services, and boosting economic activity in rural and border areas.
