Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday warned that a future US president could be hostile towards Israel, calling for new alliances with countries such as India and those in Latin America to strengthen his country's position.Netanyahu made the remarks during an event at which he presented his security doctrine, nine days before Israel's October 27 election. The remarks came hours before a strong endorsement he received from US President Donald Trump, who publicly expressed his support for Netanyahu's re-election bid days before the country goes to the polls.Trump has thrown his “complete and total endorsement” behind Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s October 27 parliamentary election, as the longtime leader struggles to gain an edge amid political uncertainty and strained public support for Trump in Israel.
“There is a window of another two years with President Trump, and one of the questions in these elections is who will work with Trump? Who will complete the remaining work?” Netanyahu said. “We need to do the best we can during these two years – and in the two years afterward – to act when things are good and even if things are bad,” he said. Netanyahu said he was preparing for that possibility by strengthening Israel’s alliances with countries across the Middle East and beyond.
Turning to Iran, Netanyahu said Israel's goal was to topple the country's ruling regime. “It cannot remain in power. It simply cannot, and I am committed to bringing it down,” he said. Netanyahu claimed that signs of unrest were beginning to emerge in Iran as economic pressure intensified under the Trump administration's blockade and sanctions.
