Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 were “badly negotiated." Speaking at an event in Gandhinagar, the prime minister added that the suspension of the water treaty has Pakistan “feeling the heat." “In the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, it was decided that the desilting of dams on J&K rivers wouldn’t be done. The gates didn’t open for 60 years… I have not done much yet. We have just put it on abeyance, but they are already sweating," said Modi. "The bottom gates for clearing sediments were to remain shut. For 60 years, these gates were never opened. Reservoirs that were supposed to be filled to 100% capacity have now been reduced to only 2% or 3%...Right now, I haven't done anything and people are sweating there (Pakistan). We have opened small gates for cleaning the dams, and there is already a flood there." Highlighting past policy missteps, the Prime Minister urged the younger generation to study the historical decisions that harmed national interests.
