The Centre has declared a one-day national mourning on Monday, July 13 as a mark of respect for the Father Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away on Sunday.In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the National Flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India on all buildings where it is flown regularly. There will also be no official entertainment on the day of mourning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, paying tribute to his leadership and contribution to Qatar's development.In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, "Deeply saddened by the passing of HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir of the State of Qatar. He was a visionary leader who transformed Qatar into a prosperous nation and a close friend of India. His contribution in strengthening India-Qatar ties will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Royal Family and the people of Qatar."
The MEA also said that Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju is expected to visit Qatar to convey condolences on behalf of the Government of India.Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani served as the Amir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before voluntarily transferring power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. During his 18-year reign, Qatar underwent rapid economic, social and cultural transformation, significantly enhancing its regional and global standing.
