Gujarat has reported a surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, with two fresh infections confirmed on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the state to five within a week, according to information. The latest cases involve a nine-month-old boy from Ahmedabad and a 59-year-old man from Kutch. Both individuals had no travel history, according to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).The earlier reported cases include an eight-year-old boy from Sabarkantha, an 80-year-old asthmatic man, and a two-month-old infant from Rajasthan. This highlights the virus’s ability to impact a wide range of age groups, from infants to the elderly.
According to information, symptoms of HMPV commonly include fever, nasal congestion, cough, and breathing difficulties, often mimicking other respiratory illnesses. First discovered in 2001, HMPV belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and spreads through respiratory droplets, contaminated surfaces, or close contact with infected individuals.
Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the virus continues to spread. Public health experts have emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene, wearing masks, and seeking timely medical care in cases of respiratory distress. The rising cases in Gujarat have raised concerns among health officials, as no travel history has been linked to the infections, indicating potential local transmission. Meanwhile, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow preventive measures to limit further spread.
