Heavy rainfall pushes up Ganga-Yamuna levels in Prayagraj

Continuous rainfall in Prayagraj has led to a sharp rise in the water levels of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, prompting authorities to issue a flood alert and intensify monitoring across vulnerable areas.
According to the latest report released by the flood control room at 8 a.m. on Sunday, water levels at the Yamuna's Naini gauge station and the Ganga's Chhatnag gauge station have risen by more than one metre during the past 24 hours.Officials, however, said that the river levels at all major monitoring stations remain well below the danger mark of 84.734 metres and that there is currently no flood-like situation in the district.Data from the flood control room showed that the Yamuna's water level at Naini increased from 76.54 metres on Saturday morning to 77.82 metres on Sunday, recording a rise of 1.28 metres in 24 hours.


Similarly, the Ganga's water level at Chhatnag rose from 76.15 metres to 77.41 metres during the same period, registering an increase of 1.26 metres.At the Phaphamau gauge station, the Ganga's water level climbed from 78.87 metres on Saturday to 79.19 metres on Sunday, an increase of 32 centimetres.Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours contributed significantly to the rise in river levels. Chhatnag recorded the highest rainfall at 47.6 mm, while Phaphamau and Naini received 8.2 mm and 6 mm of rainfall, respectively.
The district administration has placed officials on alert and is closely monitoring the situation as water levels continue to rise.

According to officials, all embankments in the district remain safe. The flood control room has been continuously assessing river conditions to ensure that precautionary measures can be implemented if water levels increase further.At 8 a.m. on Sunday, the Yamuna stood at 77.82 metres at Naini, while the Ganga measured 77.41 metres at Chhatnag and 79.19 metres at Phaphamau. All three readings remained significantly below the danger mark.Authorities said surveillance of riverbanks and embankments would continue in the coming days, particularly if rainfall persists in the region.
