In Gujarat, the sports budget has surged 141 times in the last two decades, with Rs.352 crore allocated for sports activities in this year's budget.Gujarat's sports budget, once limited to Rs.2.5 crore before 2002, has now expanded 141-fold to exceed Rs 352 crore, according to official release. This tremendous growth has propelled the state's athletes to achieve prominence on national and international stages, firmly establishing Gujarat as a center of sports excellence.
According to information, the Sports Authority of Gujarat has implemented several initiatives such as the Center of Excellence, Khel Pratibha Puraskar, Shaktidoot Yojana, In-School Yojana, District-Level Sports Schools, and Khel Mahakumbh.
The Bhupendra Patel government has introduced the Sports Policy 2022-2027 to further enhance the sports ecosystem. This policy aims to make Gujarat a leader in sports and offer athletes more opportunities to achieve their dreams. Various major sports events are now hosted in Gujarat, showcasing the state's developed sports infrastructure and commitment to athletes' growth.
The state has successfully organized the 36th National Games and the 19th National Inter-District Junior Athletics Meet (NIDJAM) in the past two years. Over the last 20 years, the Gujarat government has developed world-class sports infrastructure, including 24 district-level sports complexes, 3 taluka sports complexes, and a high-performance centre in Nadiad.
Khel Mahakumbh, launched in 2010 by then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, promotes a sports culture, discovers emerging talent, and raises health awareness through sports. It is Asia’s largest grassroots talent identification and development program, with over 53.66 lakh participants ranging from 9-year-olds to senior citizens. The state government also awards financial incentives to the winners.
August 29 is celebrated annually in India as National Sports Day to honor the birthday of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
