The Health authorities in Gujarat are on high alert following a suspected case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection reported in Himatnagar, Sabarkantha district. The patient, an eight-year-old boy currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital, showed severe pneumonia symptoms. His blood sample has been sent to a government lab for confirmation, officials said on Wednesday.. Sabarkantha District Collector Ratankanvar Gadhavicharan stated, "The case is under screening. A sample has been sent to a government lab for confirmation, and the result is awaited." The child had earlier tested positive for HMPV in a private laboratory, but the authorities opted for further verification at a government facility."
According to information, Dr. Imtiaz Memon of Baby Care Hospital, where the child is undergoing treatment, reported that the boy was admitted on Tuesday with symptoms of severe pneumonia. "The private laboratory test confirmed HMPV infection, but the district health authorities have sent another sample to a government lab to ensure accuracy," he stated.
This suspected case comes just two days after Gujarat reported its first confirmed HMPV infection in a two-month-old infant. The infant, who tested positive on December 26 in a private laboratory, has prompted health officials to implement preventive measures across the state.
The Gujarat Health Department has established isolation wards in Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot civil hospitals as a precaution. Each ward has, according to information, 15 beds to accommodate potential cases. "All arrangements are in place to tackle the situation, and the state remains vigilant," Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said. Currently, no other suspected HMPV cases have been detected, according to an official statement.
In an effort to strengthen detection capabilities, the health department has begun procuring additional testing kits. According to information, a circular issued on Monday directed government hospitals to take necessary precautions and emphasized readiness to handle HMPV cases. According to information, the ministry, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), is monitoring the situation. Minister Patel assured that chief district health officers and civil surgeons across Gujarat have been instructed to remain alert and prioritize HMPV-related cases.
