Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has granted in-principle approval to allocate Rs 606.34 crore from the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana for wastewater management and sewage treatment projects in Gandhinagar, according to official data. The allocation will fund the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), wastewater management systems, rainwater drainage networks, and a water distribution station under the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC).
According to information, Rs 245 crore will be utilized for the Jaspur STP and related infrastructure, while Rs 361.34 crore is earmarked for projects in newly incorporated villages and Town Planning (TP) areas that fall within the expanded jurisdiction of GMC.
Currently, around 60 million liters per day (MLD) of drainage water from sectors 1 to 30 of Gandhinagar, along with nearby villages including Borij, Palaj, Basan, Dholakuva, Indroda, Adivada, and Gokulpura, is collected at the Sargasan pumping station and treated at the Jaspur STP, which has a capacity of 76 MLD, according to official data. However, the expansion of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation and the increase in population density have resulted in an additional 22 MLD of wastewater being sent to the Jaspur STP.
Further, approximately 27 MLD of additional drainage water from TP areas of Gandhinagar, Khoraj village, and the Gujarat Urban Development Authority (GUDA) area is being pumped through the Adalaj pumping station into the Jaspur STP pipeline. As a result, the Jaspur STP, which is designed to treat 75 MLD of wastewater, is currently receiving 109 MLD, leading to overflows at multiple locations, including the main inlet and outlet lines at Jaspur STP, Adani Campus, Khoraj village, and the Cloverleaf junction near Adalaj Trimandir.
The excess accumulation of untreated wastewater has resulted in sewage overflow into rural areas, agricultural fields, and roads, posing potential environmental and health risks. To address this issue, the government has approved the replacement of the 11-kilometer gravity main line from Sargasan to Jaspur, which has been in operation for over two decades.
