Gujarat commemorated its 65th Foundation Day with grand celebrations, a slew of development initiatives worth Rs 649.77 crore, and a strong reaffirmation of its legacy as a driver of India’s growth. The state-level ceremony, held in Panchmahal district, was graced by Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Chief Minister Patel inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple infrastructure and public welfare projects, signalling the state’s continued commitment to inclusive growth. The projects aim to enhance connectivity, healthcare, education, and civic amenities across the district and surrounding areas. The evening celebrations at the SRP Ground featured vibrant cultural programmes showcasing Gujarat's rich heritage. During the event, Governor Devvrat and CM Patel presented the prestigious Gujarat Garima Awards to six individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the state’s development across various fields.

On this occasion, CM Patel stated, “Gujarat’s journey over the past 65 years has been a testimony to the resolve and industrious spirit of its people. Today’s projects are another step towards a more prosperous, inclusive future.” With only 5% of India’s population, Gujarat contributes a significant 8.2% to the national GDP, commands over 30% of the country’s exports, and generates nearly 8% of GST revenues. This robust economic performance reflects Gujarat’s vital role in India’s development story.
Leaders Extend Wishes on Gujarat’s Foundation Day
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and several political leaders extended heartfelt greetings on Gujarat’s Foundation Day—celebrated annually on May 1 as Gujarat Gaurav Divas. President Murmu wrote on X “On the foundation day of Gujarat state, I extend my heartiest greetings to all my countrymen, especially my Gujarati brothers and sisters living in India and abroad.”
PM Modi, who hails from the state, said Gujarat’s relentless progress and cultural vibrancy continue to inspire the nation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also conveyed their best wishes, commemorating Gujarat’s contributions to India’s democratic and economic foundation.
A Glimpse into Gujarat’s Formation History
The state of Gujarat was formed on May 1, 1960, following the bifurcation of the bilingual Bombay State on linguistic lines. The demand for a separate Gujarati-speaking state was championed by the Mahagujarat Andolan and leaders like Indulal Yagnik. The state was carved out under the Bombay Reorganisation Act, with Saurashtra and Kutch merged into it.
Ahmedabad initially served as the capital before it was shifted to Gandhinagar in 1970. Since its inception, Gujarat has emerged as a powerhouse of trade, industry, and innovation, while maintaining its cultural essence.
The Foundation Day, also known as Sthapana Divas, is a tribute to the contributions of both celebrated and unsung heroes who envisioned and built modern Gujarat—guided by the ideals of luminaries like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
